Things You Cannot Steal explores the fractured interior world of a young Black man living with the invisible aftermath of violence. The film follows Ryo, a twenty-something who is attempting, and failing, to meditate and come to terms with a violent past. This unresolved preoccupation quietly shapes his daily life, drawing him toward further struggle. When his trauma feels unmanageable, an arbitrary catastrophe occurs: he is robbed. The misfortune threatens to return him to familiar cycles of violence, but instead a moment of unexpected clarity leads Ryo to do something strange: he begins to give his possessions away willingly.Loosely inspired by a Zen kōan, the film uses minimalism and duration as narrative devices, allowing Ryo’s attempts at reconciliation to unfold like a quiet, unresolved riddle.Ultimately, Things You Cannot Steal becomes a meditation on what cannot be taken from a person: dignity, softness, imagination, and the fragile capacity to heal.
